Installation of white walls....

Post by 1911tex »

I have installed plenty of blackwall motorcycle tires; but knowing how I treated the rims in the process, I dont want to mar the white walls as they are highly subject to discoloration...suggestions? Or should I take the wheels to a motorcycle dealer for the install?

It's best to spend the money and have the tires mounted at a local cycle shop. I mount my own using tire irons and its a pain with risk.

My white walls are mounted, but it was like alligator wrestling. No fun at all. These little 16 inch wheels were harder to mount than the 18 inch wheels of my CB175, by far. I have 3 tire tools I use for the process, but it's still a wrestling match.

May have posted this before here , but , the tires should be easy to mount with a couple of tire levers and some Murphy's oil soap on the beads .
First sprinkle some baby powder in the new tire ,this lets the tube expand in the tire easier , soap the bead and push it on the rim . You my have to use a tire iron to pop it over the rim . Next install the tube in the tire , slip the valve stem in the rim hole and add a little air to inflate the tube into the tire . Soap the outer bead and you should be able to start about a 1/3rd. of the bead over the rim . Make sure the tube isn't between the bead and the rim and use the tire irons the pry the bead over the rim . Go slowly and take little bites of the bead to wedge over the rims edge .
Once the bead is in place , center the valve stem in the rim hole . Grab the tire and rim and move it in the appropriate direction . Them you can screw the nue down the valve stem , add some air and seat the beads . If the beads have dried out wipe on a little more Murphy's oil soap . This will help the beads seat . Air and depressure the tire several times , this will help seat the tube in the tire, no wrinkles in the tube . Give it a final airing and your good to go .
