Starter Sprocket Binding?

Post by Steverinomeiste »

Thank You for all the help you have given me.
Before lightly tightening the flywheel bolt and with the flywheel properly indexed, the ratchet feature of the starter chain sprocket, the one on the crankshaft end, ratchets just fine. When I lightly tighten the flywheel bolt I can turn the engine in either direction by pulling on the starter chain, the gear seems locked. When I loosen the flywheel bolt again, the sprocket ratchets just fine. I don't know what I would do without you guys. Probably not finish this bike, that's what
Thank You

Pull the flywheel off again. Look at the backside of the flywheel where the starter sprocket fits. Inside you will find 3 rollers. Each roller is spring loaded. You are missing a roller, or spring, or the spring/roller is jammed up. Not to worry, I have extra parts if you have lost any.

Thank You Spokes;
I checked the bearings on the inside of the flywheel and they appear to be working ok. I put a gob of grease around those bearings and their seat on the sprocket to get an impression of how they fit together. Their fit seems to be good. Something that I didn't mention in my earlier post is that this is not the original crankshaft assembly. It is from a CB92. It has the same part number as the CA95.I also put some grease on the backside of the flywheel and after I've tightened the flywheel bolt, then removed it and the flywheel for inspection, the grease is completely squeezed out. I am gathering from this, is that there is no gap between the backside of the flywheel and the base of the starter sprocket. Maybe the crankshaft taper is a little smaller than the original crankshaft so it is allowing the flywheel to squeeze the starter sprocket when the flywheel bolt is tightened?

Well, you got me on this one. Something is wrong or misunderstood. The The flywheel should spin free. The starter chain engages when you rotate the flywheel clockwise. I am certainly unsure about the CB92 (CA92?) shaft and the starter/flywheel fit. This would be a god question for Sam.

I'd like to play one of my "stupid question" cards.

Just want to validate - is the sprocket installed with the sprocket gear facing inward, and the journal facing outward, like in the picture below?

I'm not sure if it can even be installed the other way around, but I thought I'd ask, since there are no pictures to review. I'm a visual creature. :-D

Starter Gear Binding?

Post by Steverinomeiste »

Thank You Spokes and BytheLake:
Yes, I am assembling it just like this diagram. Sorry I didn't post pics. I will post them when I am back home Tuesday. The crank assembly is out of the 125cc three main engine. I think they are model CB92 but I could be wrong. I looked at Oaky's Garage Youtube of his and looked put together like a CA95. I did something today that. I am kind of afraid to admit to without getting some feedback on the idea first. But here goes:
I figured if the flywheel was binding against the sprocket instead of seating against the taper of the crankshaft why not just swell the flywheel hole a little to tighten the fitment? I figured we are dealing with 10,000th's of an inch. (I have a hard time thinking in metric). I took my punch and gave it a little tap with my brass hammer at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. I slipped the flywheel back on the crank and it took care of it, no binding! This sounds like a pretty crude attempt, but, I took the flywheel back off and looked through the hole and there was no visible sign of distortion. I stuck my finger in there and couldn't feel any either. So, I believe those four little taps where enough to tighten up the fit. I torqued the flywheel bolt and still, the sproket is now working perfectly. :)

I'm surprised that it made that much of a difference, especially after the bolt was torqued.

No matter, glad you're back on track. Cheers.

Starter Sprocket Binding Solved

Post by Steverinomeiste »

I explained my brilliant brass hammer and punch treatment to a machinist friend of mine. He wasn't nearly as polite as JetBlackChemist and ByTheLake were to me. He told me that I was trying to do a Mickey Mouse :o fix and I would ruin the main bearings by messing up the taper fit causing the flywheel to wobble. What I really had accomplished most likely was what JetBlackChemist said in that I must of seated the blywheel bearings with my tapping. My friend wants to check my flywheel and repair anything I messed up on it. I really appreciate the great guidance I get from you all. :)
