'65 CA95...points cover
'65 CA95...points cover
My neighbor has a '65 simular to mine. His points cover has the tack gizmo on it. Is this common to '65 as mine just has the fins or is it an earlier head that replaced the original?
Is it possible to remove the tack gizmo points cover and replace with the one like mine...or is the tack gizmo integral within the older head and not replaceable.

kartgreen, you are correct. Dont know what I was thinking...should have said right cylinder head side cover.......looking on page 15 and 16 of the shop manual, I answered my own question. I dont know if the tach drive gear was an option, or if his cylinder head came off an earlier or later engine. It may even have value if he wants to run a tach......if we can figure out what tach cable fits into it.
Looking again at the shop manual, I dont think this side cover can be replaced with a finned version like mine...the exploded view shows a cam shaft gear going into the tach drive gear which drives the tach. Good ole shop manual.......hard for us guys sometimes to read manuals......thanks!

The earlier engines had the tach drives stock. I've got one on my '62 as well. I think they were inherited from the CB92, as they offered a tach on that one as a racing option (it replaced the speedo)
Brain fade , you can check the engine case # on the left side to determine what year the motor is . If it's an earlier motor then the tach drive was standard . If it's a 1965 motor than the drive was added, which begs the question is it an early head . It the tach drive is functional it has the early camshaft ,maybe an early head .
Our 63 has the tach drive too.

My Honda shop manual says it is a 1963 . Look at the frame serial #'s as well to determine the year of the frame . The first number after CA95 is the year of the frame . If this all matches with the title, see if the title gives the month ,date and year the bike was sold new . Maybe a 1963 that was sold as a 1965 . Titling laws were less stringent during that time period and I don't doubt dealers took advantage of the fact that they had a new motorcycle sitting on the showroom floor , just not a current year model .
If the frame is a 1965 then the motor was replaced at some point .

Kartgreen: Frame number is CA953107434 which is darn close to the engine # CA95E3107488! I don't think they could get much closer on an assembly line. The clear title shows its a January '65. Maybe manufactured in '63, and shipped over here to the distributor in 64 and sold in '65. What is interesting is that in the center of the base and behind the cylinders of the engine is the late model rectangle hole that the early models did not have....Is that unusual? If this coincides with your thoughts, maybe there is such a thing as an early/late model with the tach drive??? Hey, maybe it is rare and worth a million! Thanks.

The question crossed my mind; should i bust the bubble or not? Education won...I ran across someone can't remember where; whose frame and engine numbers actually matched that I agree has to be super hard to come by, we had a discussion about it here not too long ago, I can't remember what post though, mine are less than 20 digits apart, I can't remember the exact number.
The tach drive parts can be sourced, off of Ebay and retrofitted to any CA95, the bike is over 40; it's possible that the engine case was changed at some point.
I suppose the point (POP) all these parts interchange, and anyone can make the same modifications if they really wanted too, but that doesn't make your bike any less special...but the only way it's worth a million is if you crack the case and find a million inside there. Sorry

It appears the bike was manufactured in 1963 and your thought process is more than likely right on . I have a 1964 engine that matches my 1965 engines with the casting hole behind the cylinders . So it's possible there was a running change in the casting process .
Spokes or Smithers may have more info on the engine changes . Does the engine have the shifter detent tower on the right side of the motor like a 1965 ? Digging for clues is always fun !
