Now that I have the lighting circuits fixed, the starter switch is giving me trouble. The starter runs all of the time the ignition switch is on.I think there is pa problem inside of the handlebars. According to my service manual the wires are yellow with a brown stripe and it looks like they connect in the headlight cowling is this correct? I found a nasty rats nest of patched wires inside the left side of the handle bar and wont be surprised to find the same thing in the right side. Does the starter switch work similiar to the horn switch or am I going to find something different. The horn switch is a grounding switch and it looks like the starter is a simple spst switch if im looking at the service book right.
Thanks Curt
starter switch
Yes, the starter switch is a grounding switch. Make sure that the little phenolic mount that holds the contact is secure and the button retracts. Then look for bare wire exiting out of the contact of the phenolic mount and make sure that it is not grounding out.
Disconnect the starter button wire and see if the motor still runs. If so, you have a sticky solinoid switch. The solinoid switch can be taken apart to be cleaned and lightly lubed.

starter switch
Thanks for the info. Im leaving for Michigan tomorrow afternoon and wont get to check it out until I get back. It was disapointing to find the starter problem. The bike has been on the bench for what seems like forever with the clutch and the wiring problems. I wanted in the worse way to put it on the road today. Oh well, its a project, not a daily driver.
