You don't have to crack the case, just get some good lock pliers for a good grip slowly give it little in out slides then slowly pull it out, grease up the new one on the inner edge of gasket and the rod and slide that sucker in. lol reminds me of a funny story, I had a Yamaha enduro and was doing a lot of doughnuts, I went to straighten out and shift and i heard a loud clunk then something drop, I looked down and there lay my shift rod in the dirt with a slight bend, I picked it up gave it a drag across my pants and shoved it back in the hole bend first of all things and hammered it back in and it never came out again (thanks to the bend I assume) and it shifted fine then on out as if nothing ever happened
