muffler resto question

Post by Steverinomeiste »

Hi Everyone
I picked up a pair of very solid but dented CB160 mufflers at the Corvallis Vintage Motorcycle Swapmeet this morning. I was wondering if anyone has ever split these at the seam to knock the dents out of them? I'm pretty sure I can mig weld them back up.

IN my opinion is all about the chrome. I think the proper shinny bits set off the bike.
If re-chroming you might want better cores (I'd ask the shop you use).
I'd rather drill the dent and use a puller and then mig up the hole.
On the other hand I have seen decent looking VHT spray jobs over roughed up (sanded) chrome. You could use a metal filler as a "bondo" and then spray.
If going to a black coating you can do the same. IF trying to get the stock look there are a couple of aftermarket muffs that look ok to good for less than a chrome job.

Thanks Larz
I would like to have a stock looking bike and that's why I haven't looked into the aftermarket but I might not have a choice. Can you point me in the direction of some good looking muffs?

IMHO JC Whitney has the best selection but there is always ebay. I like the Dunstall look but there are others. I have a couple of muffs like yours for my CB160 and am faced with the same dilema.
