Wow, bunch of pinholes in tank

Post by Erik S »

Lord have mercy- Got my POR15 kit, as mentioned here, used the Marine Clean and found probably 50 pinholes beneath rust bubbles on the paint on the gas tank. I'd repaired a few on the underside of the tank that revealed themselves with JB Weld.
Got my trusty O-ring pick and scratched the rust bubbles, most flaked rust and easily poked through. Got out the sander and sanded to bare metal at these areas with 240 grit.
Question is- should I repair these areas with JB Weld gooped in and sand when cured? Ideas? If I use this home remedy will the sealer in the POR 15 kit seal any lurking holes?

If the tank is otherwise usable check with you local radiator repair shop to see if they can solder the bottom of the tank . If the metal is too far gone you can also have a welding shop cutout and weld in new sheet metal .Stick on putty like JB Weld should be viewed as a temparary repair .
It sounds like welding in patch panals are your best bet . Good luck .
