Touring on the Benly Touring 150

Post by ByTheLake »

I always thought that the word 'Touring' in the name of the Benly Touring 150 was a bit odd. The Benly isn't the first bike one thinks about when imagining a touring bike. Heck, most modern scooters would likely be better touring rides than the little Benly.

Since I'm still breaking in the engine following the bike's restoration, I needed to get some easy miles on the clock. Between the rain drops and gale force winds today, I managed to take the ’65 Honda around town. On the way to Bellaire, MI and later into my little town of Alden, I experienced sleet biting into my face like little needles. The sleet didn’t bother the Honda one bit.

I stopped at local "landmarks" along the way to take pictures, worried that the high winds would knock the bike over. While I stopped for pictures at the Dockside restaurant, a woman got out of her car and started taking pictures of the little motorbike with her cell phone. After taking some pictures in Alden, I returned to the house.

The odometer now reads 6201 – 52 miles since it’s been restored. Time to change the initial break-in oil.

Below, I stopped at some hilltop farmland just west of Bellaire, MI.

No trip to town would be complete without a stop at the bar

In the shot below, you can see just about all of my town, which would fit in a football field.

Beautiful photography and beautiful CA95! I am inspired to go out and finish straightening out my wiring.

I have a few motorcycle backpacks, so I could see myself taking a day trip on the little beast. 50-100 miles in one day would be as far as I'd go. Those are hardly touring numbers, though. It should have probably been named the Benly Commuting 150. :)

Your work puts my efforts to shame. What a great looking bike! But since we're sharing pics of small towns........ 83 degrees here...

Nice work BTL. My favorite picture is the one at the depot, just perfect.
I do have one question tho.... WTF is Sleet? ;-) . Night time low here is 82 and severe sunshine during the day. We'll see about 20 minutes of winter maybe in January.

Spokes, I like that license plate frame.

Yeah, Larz, it gets cold here early. Going into the high 30s tonight. That's still "shorts" weather around here, though. I'll park the Benly for the Winter when the snow flies, but my little CB175 sees year-'round use. As long as the roads are free of snow, I'll take the 175 into town for for breakfast or a coffee on the weekends. Below is a shot taken February 4 of this year.

I still own all the bikes I've ever owned. My '65 Super Cub is my first, and I took my road test on it. It's in the midst of a rebuild now - it's earned it. I have new exhaust pieces and will be adding the non-US turn signal pieces from the general export version, much like I did with the Benly this year.

The CB175 in the picture above was last year's restoration project. It never gets "winterized" - I just shift to a 5W-30 for the icy cold weather. The bike seems to love the Winter, the engine runs strong in the cold air.
