Bikes I've owned and own.

Post by Erik S »

First bike- '76 Honda CB 550. Introduced me to two wheel transpo. Put quite a few miles on that gentleman. A great bike- never broke down. Gave away 4-5 years ago- darn it.
1973 RD 350 Yamaha. A real ring ding, ding ding. Loud, fast and fun. Brakes and handling not so good. Wish I still owned it. Traded it for something.
1971 or 72 MotoGuzzi Eldorado 750cc. Big hunk of a bike, underpowered, but handled like a dream. Old style with chrome knee sides on tank. Had a Bosch (I think) belt driven generator between the cylinders, ala VW. Hit the gas and the rear would raise up- shaft drive. Sold to an enthusiast- probably still around.
1971 Harley Davidson FLH. Electroglide in blue. Loved that big old beast. Drove it like a truck- slow and easy. My joy was to scrape the boards in tight turns. Dressed it up and down. Installing an S&S carb made it run and start so much easier. Was expensive to keep running- I figured about $50 every two weeks for repairs and parts. There is nothing like a heavyweight bike to ride. When I hit the lottery, yea right, there will be one similar in my garage. Sold to a guy in Canada.
1973 Jawa 250cc California. Sits in the garage today. Underpowered- maybe 50mph on the highway. Neighborhood bike. Love to smoke out dogs who choose to chase me. Premix only. No title. Gets lots of comments at the neighborhood pool. Saved from a dimwad who might have disassembled it and scattered it to the wind- most likely the dump or scrapyard.
1965 Honda CA95. Undergoing restoration- have the title, but maybe make it just another neighborhood bike. Thought the title was bogus, but the year sold named 1967 and used the frame serial #. Is real. Undecided to make street legal- my buddy will probably make me, so we can ride around town. Him on his '72 Honda CB 350, nice bike. Super shape, but an older restoration. Needs going through.

  • 1970s Mini Bike w/1963 2HP Briggs and Stratton power. Tube tire suspension. Convenient starting rope.
  • 1985 Yamaha YZ80 with couch-like single rear shock and forks. On/Off switch powerband included.
  • 1965 Honda CA160 found in a barn and used in parades. :D
  • 1986 Kawasaki KX125 Lima Bean Green. One of the toughest bikes I've ever owned. I didn't realize how much power that engine had until I later rode some newer 125's.
  • 1990 Honda CR250 Didn't take me more than a couple months until I needed more power to get those larger wheels spinning. This machine had more mid-range then I ever imagined. I was the luckiest kid in town on that bike. Rock solid and it never let me down.
  • 1963 Honda CB250 Superhawk - me and my dad went to LA and picked it up from a friend of his.
  • 1964 Honda S90 bought from an older friend and sold it back to him because he was begging me. He instantly sold it to someone overseas and shipped it off. Big mistake on that one.
  • 1969 Honda CL70 I rode this little scrambler on a lot of ranches and all over the hills. I could pull up barbed wire and slide it under allowing me to go anywhere I wanted! Amazingly fast and capable little bike for what it is.
  • 1990 Yamaha FZR1000 I just graduated high school now, had saved $5K in the bank and I was on a mission to have the fastest streetbike possible. I knew in 1990 the FZR1000 got motorcycle of the year and I found one in LA in the paper I could afford. That was a whole different dimension in motorcycling. That 5 valve water cooled engine had more power than the oil cooled GSXR1100s! I actually proved it a few times against some friends too. ;) I put some serious miles on that machine, never crashed it once and sold it for $4K to a guy that approached me at a gas station asking me about it.
To be continued...

I seem to hold onto every bike I've ever owned, but my list is much shorter than the rest of the gang. In the order of acquisition:

1) '65 Honda C102 Super Cub. Took my road test on it, and still own it today. Runs great, runs forever on a gallon of gas, and causes little kids to point at me and laugh hysterically.

2) '67 Bianchi Aquilotto. Slow, absolutely no parts available, but is a great conversation starter. My only 2-stroke.

3) '72 Honda CB175. Love this, ride it regularly. Hard to beat the thrill of riding this bike at 70 mph around the twisty roads through the woods and around the lakes. Exhilarating.

4) '99 Triumph Legend TT. My daily rider. A 900cc triple with retro styling.

5) '65 Honda CA95. Current restoration project, roughly 4 hours from finishing, but I haven't had a spare hour in the past 4 weeks. Plan to wrap this up by September 16.

Since I can't seem to part with my bikes, my wife says "no more bikes", and "you can only ride one at a time". Blah blah blah, whatever - :)

First Bike:8th grade 1965 Red Honda CA95 for $75.00 from one of the older kids in the neighborhood a few streets over. Rode the crap out of that bike on the trails. Seems like a million miles. Modded the crap out of it. Got some parts from another kid...front forks from a Yamaha enduro that I made work. A swingarm, shocks and wheel from a Kawasaki. I even put knobby tires on. Do they still call them knobbies today? Just exhaust headers, no mufflers. Cut the rear fender off at the shock mounts, put red "Preston Petty Plastic Fenders" on it. (Remember Those?) Even put MX handlebars on it. Eventually had to have a bracket welded on the upper shock stems to keep them from bending, same with the footpegs. The engine finally quit after 3 years of un-relentless beating on it. and I brought it to the dump. Still wish I had my pictures of it. It was "Bad Ass Man"!

71 Yamaha DT60 Enduro
72 Kawasaki 100G4TR
An old Vespa 125, Can't remember the year. Got knobby tires for it from an old kawasaki dealer that worked out of his house. Used to skim across mud holes on the trails while my buddies were getting stuck in them. Didn't handle for crap but a blast to ride.
70 Penton 125 6-Day that was a basket case. Traded the Kawi 100 for it.
1973 Hodaka Ace 100B - Crashed real bad on it and stopped riding for a while.
Got into racing motocross - best days of my life!
77 Suzuki RM125
78 Maico 440
79 Kawasaki KX250
80 YZ465
Got married...Racing ended
72 Kawasaki H1 500 Was a winter project. New Wiseco Pistons, Denco Expansion Chambers, Carbs re-jetted and synced. Only kept bike for a short time. This was the only motorcycle that scared the snot out of me ever!
Decided to lay off bikes being married and all.
Got the urge again in 2000.
86 Honda Goldwing. Bought cheap cleaned it up and repaired everything that needed it. Brought it home to surprise my wife. Took her for a ride and she was hooked! Got it with 20K and sold it with 175K for more than double what I paid for it originally.
06 Yamaha Midnight Venture Our current cruiser. Fantastic machine!
1963 CA95 Early Model - My current resto project.
1966 CA160 Next project.
2 76 Kawasaki KH500's Project after the CA160. I've got to be nuts after the way that my 72 H1 scared me.
